We carry out a detailed test and analysis of your sample of honeybees to determine whether either of the Nosema species that affect honeybees are present. These are Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae.
Once you have purchased the test you will need to collect and send a sample of your honeybees to us for analysis.
WE WILL SEND THE ADDRESS YOU REQUIRE ONCE PURCHASE HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND PAID
Collect 30–60 older, foraging honey bees from the hive entrance or lid during a sunny, warm day, as they are most likely to carry Nosema. Use a Freezer ziplock bag or similar to collect them, then freeze to kill. Ensure samples are clearly labeled with the hive ID
Steps for Collecting Bee Samples:
- Timing: Sample during late morning or early afternoon on a warm, sunny day when bees are flying, ensuring older foragers are captured.
- Labeling & Submission: Label each sample bag with a hive identifier and beekeeper details
- Method: Temporarily block the entrance with foam, wait for foragers to return, and collect them. Use a small container to scoop 30-60 bees from the entrance into the bag, seal the bag.
- Killing/Preserving: Place the bag/s in a freezer to kill the bees humanely.
- Quantity: 30 bees are typically sufficient for analysis, though up to 60 can be collected for better accuracy. Less than 30 will reduce the accuracy significantly.
- Send the sample using a guaranteed next day service. We recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery or First Class Next Day services.
Typically, the test is performed on the same day the samples are received and a diagnosis report is sent to you via email within 48hrs.
